Abstract

Economic growth has resulted in atmospheric pollution nowadays; promoting the economy while maintaining a benign atmospheric environment becomes a hot topic. Thus, it is crucial to explore the benign coordinated interaction (CI) between the economy and the atmospheric environment so that bilateral enhancement is possible. This study constructed the coupling coordination degree model to effectively evaluate the coordinated interactions between the economy and atmospheric environment with the Yangtze River Delta Area and Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei Area as cases. With the model, this study constructed the CI mechanism to effectively figure out the CI complexity and set up the evaluation frameworks to measure the economy and atmospheric environment. The framework of both subsystems consisted of 3 aspects, respectively (scale, structure, and benefits for the economy; pressure, state, and response for the atmospheric environment). The information entropy weight analysis, the technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution analysis, and GM (1, 1) prediction analysis were jointly applied to identify and predict the CI status. The results prove that (1) high-quality development tactics, aiming to develop the economy without damaging the atmospheric environment, is feasible; (2) the enhancement of balanced and coordinated development among regions is possible and successful currently; (3) the predicted CIs between the economy and atmospheric environment prove to perform differently among regions in the future; thus, specific policy implications are required. The results obtained in the study are essential to be applied to predict and achieve benign CIs between the economy and atmospheric environment.
