Abstract

Civil societies and nongovernmental organizations in recent times have played very significant roles in the attainment of the objectives of most development intervention projects in most rural and developing countries of the world. These roles cannot be over emphasized. This paper therefore took a cursory look at the roles civil societies and nongovernmental organizations can play in the attainment of the millennium development goals, (MDGs) in Cross River State, Nigeria. One research question and one hypothesis were formulated for the study. There are a total of 61 registered CSOs/NGOs in Cross River State, Nigeria, using a multi-staged random sampling technique, 40 organizations were selected for the study across the state. 5 respondents were also randomly selected from each organization, (these respondents included the education manager, project manager, the finance manager, program directors and the monitoring and evaluation officer of each organization). Using a stage wise sampling procedure, 200 respondents were sampled and used for the study. Questionnaire and key informant interview were instruments for data collection. Using simple percentage and correlation to analyze data generated with the instruments, the researchers assessed to see if there is any relationship between the roles of CSOs/NGOs and the attainment of the MDGs? The result of the calculated correlation analysis shows a very positive correlation between the roles of CSOs/NGOs in the attainment of the MDGs. The implication of the correlation analysis is that when these CSOs/NGOs are properly involved and their potentials harnessed, they can contribute in no small way to the attainment of the MDGs in Cross River State, Nigeria. It is however recommended that CSOs/NGOs should be engaged from program design to implementation and the monitoring and evaluation of all development intervention programs. This will guarantee accountability, transparency and delivery of projects to the intended beneficiaries on record time.
