Abstract

This paper reviews the situation of the Québec trucking industry after a few years of economic deregulation. Licensing authorities still exist, but in practice they are no constraints left on market entry since January 1st 1988. We will look at the three major issues related to deregulation: structural changes in the industry, discrimination against smaller shippers and carriers' efficiency. Our review shows that shippers benefit from the increased competition situation. They can get better services, of a greater diversity and at better cost. Concentration in the industry and discrimination against smaller shippers do not appear to be the case.
