Abstract

[eng] Technological innovations and banks' specific features. The financial sector has experienced dramatic structural changes since the mid seventies. These transformations will go on : for instance, some banks might externalise sorne of their activities. But banks' specific features remain strong, and make it unlikely that financial intermediaries will disappear in the years to come. [fre] Les transformations structurelles dans l'industrie des services financiers constituent une expression du mouvement d'innovation à l'oeuvre depuis le milieu des années 70. Les technologies de l'information fondées sur la micro-électronique constituent un enjeu essentiel dans la recherche de compétitivité. Il est probable que les transformations des firmes bancaires vont se poursuivre : le modèle de l'assemblage industriel dans le cadre duquel certaines firmes sous-traitent une grande partie du processus de production peut d'ores et déjà être appliqué à la banque. Mais les banques, du fait de leur dimension financière et de leur rôle social, ont encore une spécificité qui rend leur disparition peu crédible.
