Abstract

A klasszikus közgazdaságtan egyik legfontosabb tétele szerint a nemzetközi kereskedelemben érvényesül a komparatív előnyök elve. Ezt a tételt többnyire Ricardónak szokták tulajdonítani, de a prioritás kérdése két évszázad óta viták tárgya. A 20. század második felében Robert Merton tudományszociológiája fogalmazta meg a "többszörös felfedezés" általános érvényűnek tekintett hipotézisét, amelyre néhányan a közgazdaságtan történetében is igyekeztek példákat találni, közéjük sorolva a komparatív előnyök elvét. Ricardo és kortársai (Robert Torrrens, Heinrich von Storch és egy névtelen angol pamfletíró) közel egy időben megjelent, a külkereskedelmi előnyöket elemző szövegeinek bemutatását követően a tanulmány a prioritási vita első szakaszát, Torrens és John Stuart Mill hullámzó vélekedéseit ismerteti. A következő rész a Ricardo példájában szereplő "négy bűvös szám" a 19. század végétől máig ívelő historiográfiáját tekinti át. Az elmélettörténészek vitájában a két alapnarratíva: a Torrens prioritási igényét elfogadó és a komparatív előnyök elméletének érdemi kidolgozását Ricardónak tulajdonító álláspont különböző változatai fogalmazódtak meg, de konszenzus nem született.
