Preference for electric vehicles among young adults: A discrete choice analysis in China

Abstract

With the increasing severity of global climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions, the transport sector, particularly the promotion of electric vehicles, has gained worldwide attention. This study focuses on the intentions of young adults (aged 18–35) in China toward electric vehicles adoption, using stated preference survey data and applying an integrated choice and latent variable model. This model is capable of capturing the influence of both observable and unobservable attributes. The findings indicate that the potential electric vehicles consumer group is characterized by being female, students, well-educated, environmentally aware, and having a positive perception of electric vehicles. These individuals are more inclined to choose electric vehicles. Additionally, many young Chinese consumers prefer vehicles with higher refueling/charging convenience, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and benefits such as driving restriction exemptions or parking fee discounts. Scenario analysis revealed that conventional vehicle remains the dominant choice in the market unless the refueling/charging convenience of electric vehicles was significantly improved. When the refueling/charging convenience of electric vehicles matches that of conventional vehicle, the market share of conventional vehicle almost declined entirely. The heterogeneity of different groups on electric vehicles preference was analyzed. Finally, recommendations for promoting electric vehicles adoption among Chinese youth are proposed based on the study’s findings.
