Urban sustainability and public transport: Stakeholder dynamics in Finnish cities

Abstract

This study explores how public transportation can help achieve urban sustainability by focusing on the roles of different stakeholders in Finnish cities. Using principles from Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) and stakeholder theory, the research examines how governance of public transportation can address environmental, economic, and social aspects of sustainability. Through qualitative methods like interviews, focus groups, and document analysis, the study analyses three well-developed public transport systems in Finland. The findings highlight the important roles of various stakeholders, such as passengers, operators, and government agencies, in shaping sustainable public transportation policies. Key results show that good governance and the use of eco-friendly technologies greatly improve urban sustainability. The study concludes that engaging stakeholders and using innovative governance strategies are crucial for successful sustainable public transport systems, offering insights for global sustainability efforts.
