The impact of fintech development and advanced industrial structure on regional criminal offenses

Abstract

Using data from 31 provinces and municipalities in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) from 2009 to 2023, this paper employs a fixed effects model to examine the impact of FinTech development and industrial structure upgrading on regional criminal offenses. The study finds that the development of FinTech significantly reduces the level of regional criminal offenses; industrial structure upgrading can markedly suppress regional criminal offenses; FinTech development can lower regional criminal offenses by promoting industrial structure upgrading; and the effect of industrial structure upgrading on regional criminal offenses exhibits heterogeneity between regions with high and low levels of human capital.
