Abstract

•Unique & elite data shed light on the tensions among clashing managerial perspectives in the disruptive innovation domain.•The hegemony of banks is diminishing as disruptive innovation has led to the commoditisation of banking services.•Hyperlocal platformization & institutional ambidexterity confer a competitive advantage of who controls customer interface.•Money digitisation & data monetisation become dominant in defining a conclusive taxonomy of new business & income models.•We update and enrich the current literature on disruptive innovation in the emerging financial ecosystem.
