The impact of international industrial transfer on the embeddedness of global value chains

Abstract

Based on the OECD-TIVA (2023) database, this paper selects the macro data of 20 manufacturing industries in 38 countries from 2000 to 2018 to conduct an empirical study on the impact of international industrial transfer on the embeddedness of the global value chain The research findings are as follows: Firstly, there exists a nonlinear "U" relationship between international industrial transfer and GVC embeddedness. Secondly, the heterogeneity analysis based on the level of economic development indicates that international industrial transfer in developed countries has a nonlinear "U" relationship with GVC embeddedness, while in developing countries, it promotes GVC embeddedness. This paper proposes the following policy recommendations for different stages of international industrial transfer:First, in the initial stage, the host country government should strengthen the technology absorption and "learning by doing" mechanism.Secondly, in the medium term, local governments cooperate with enterprises to promote cluster development and innovation.Finally,in the later stages, international organizations dominate standard coordination and technological breakthroughs.
