The impact of trade protectionism on export enterprises: Inferences from the China-U.S. trade war

Abstract

This paper investigates the relationship between trade protectionism and the performance of export enterprises, using data from Chinese export enterprises, using date from Chinese export companies spanning 2014 to 2022. The results show that trade protectionism significantly hinders export performance, with a more pronounced effect on non-high-tech firms. Export enterprises can mitigate these effects through market diversification and innovation investment, though the effectiveness of these strategies varies between high-tech and non-high-tech firms.
