Abstract

Torrefaction was a promising thermal pretreatment approach to upgrade the quality of biomass. The comparison between the influence of dry torrefaction pretreatment (DTP) and wet torrefaction pretreatment (WTP) on the properties of corn stalk (CS) and the subsequent gasification performance was investigated. The results demonstrated that, compared with DTP, WTP not only removed 29.7 % of the oxygen content in CS but also eliminated 79.8 % of the AAEMs. The yield of producer gas from the gasification of WTP-treated CS was higher than that of DTP-treated CS, primarily attributed to the superior quality and higher gasification reactivity of WTP-treated CS. Both DTP and WTP enhanced the LHV of the producer gas, with maximum values of 9.35 MJ/m3 for DTP-220 and 11.42 MJ/m3 for WTP-180, respectively. In addition, with the increase of torrefaction temperature, the HHV of gasified bio-char drived from both DTP and WTP treated CS significantly increased, which the maximum HHV of bio-char were 26.70 MJ/kg for DTP-300 and 28.09 MJ/kg for WTP-260, respectively.
