Abstract

This article provides a review of the thermal energy storage (TES) applied in the organic Rankine cycle (ORC). In this study, ORC utilizing intermittent heat sources with low and medium temperatures up to 350 °C are discussed. The possible configuration of TES placed in the ORC system is reported here. Furthermore, the common sensible heat TES and phase change materials (PCM) are summarized. Various solid and liquid types of sensible heat TES are provided. Also, the organic, inorganic, and eutectic types of solid-liquid PCMs are discussed. This paper also presents the development processes in the design of a thermally integrated power plant based on ORC and TES. Some further prospective directions of research in this topic also is briefly described. There are several aspects that need to be solved in this thermally integrated system in order to achieve good performance and high efficiency starting from the designed parameters and a comparative study that take some external influencer into account.
