Abstract

Traffic flow models are essential tools for analyzing and regulating road networks, especially within complex multi-lane environments. This paper introduces a novel modeling framework that integrates density-delay effects and overtaking dynamics into multi-lane traffic systems. By capturing these often-overlooked driver behaviors, the proposed model offers a more comprehensive and realistic understanding of traffic stability and overall system performance. Through a series of theoretical analyses and numerical simulations, we systematically investigate the individual and combined effects of density delay, overtaking behavior and lane-changing dynamics on the evolution of traffic flow. This multi-level examination allows us to uncover how each factor influences stability, wave formation and the emergence of complex patterns, as well as how their interactions shape the overall behavior of multi-lane traffic systems when passing is allowed.
