Bifurcation and jamming transition in car-following model integrating PD control to curb overtaking behaviors under CAVs platform

Abstract

With the advancement of intelligent network technology, the intelligence level of traffic flow has increased, and its complexity is growing daily. Moreover, in the overtaking situation, the dynamic behaviors of the traffic system are complex, which can easily cause accidents and congestion. Especially, it significantly affects overtaking behaviors due to the perception capabilities of connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) regarding the main-lane average expected velocity (MLAEV) and the adjacent-lane average velocity (ALAV). Therefore, we construct a new car-following model with a proportional-differential (PD) control to offset the negative effects of overtaking behaviors under the CAVs platform. Then, bifurcation theory and control theory are employed to investigate traffic stability, which is affected by the MLAEV and ALAV fields, overtaking behaviors, and PD control. Finally, simulation results indicate that overtaking behaviors on two lanes, by perceiving the MLAEV the ALAV fields, can easily lead to traffic fluctuations and congestion, significantly deteriorating the stability of CAVs platform. Especially, as the overtaking frequency gradually increases, the stability of the CAVs platform will weaken. When the overtaking frequency attains 0.3, severe congestion will occur. Nevertheless, PD control may adjust CAVs' velocity and acceleration, reduce the risk of rear-end or lateral collision when overtaking behaviors occur, and smooth fluctuations during vehicle operation. In term of simulation, the fluctuations in headway, hysteresis loop, and power spectrum are significantly suppressed by strengthening the proportional (kP≥0.3) and the differential gains (kD≤−0.3).
