Abstract

Purpose: This study investigated the prevalence and predictors of demeaning behaviors among junior-ranking police officers in Oyo, a semi-urban Nigerian policing context. While policing literature often frames officers as perpetrators of aggression toward citizens, little attention has been given to toxic workplace dynamics within the force itself. Design/Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 100 junior-ranking officers selected from six divisions under Oyo Area Command. Standardized scales measured demeaning behaviors, occupational stress, authoritarian leadership, perceived organizational injustice, and ethical leadership. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression. Findings: Results revealed a high prevalence of demeaning behaviors, with 72% of officers reporting frequent experiences.
