Abstract

The latest financial crisis has severely damaged the banking industry’s reputation and has lead to a loss of confidence among the population. In this context, a niche in the banking sector attracted considerable attention. It practices ethical-ecological banking and differentiates itself from traditional banks by pursuing ethical customer relationships and value-based lending. Consequently, the sector is credited with the potential to regain lost customer confidence. This paper analyzes the chances and risks of the ethical-ecological banking sector. Chances lie in the increasing public awareness of sustainability and in favorable policy frameworks. Potential alterations, however, pose a risk. Moreover, the anonymity of the ethical-ecological banking concept and industry-specific barriers hinder the growth of the sector. The elimination of these limitations is tackled by the sector itself, but a sustainable increase in its market share requires political support and a rethinking of the population.
