Cultural capital, economic capital, and participation in early childhood education: A place‐based approach

Abstract

Early childhood educational development (ECED) is increasingly recognized as a crucial period for human development. We studied the relation of cultural capital, economic capital, and participation in center‐based ECED at a local level. We used a high‐quality national database, collecting data from 103 Italian provinces. Choropleth maps, structural equation modeling (SEM), and mediation analysis were adopted to assess the effect of cultural and economic capital on participation in ECED. We employed multi‐sample SEM to assess geographical disparities at a regional level. We found that Central Italian provinces present the highest level of cultural capital, as well as the highest rate of participation in ECED. Cultural capital, but not economic capital, is associated with participation in ECED in the short and medium term. At least in part, cultural capital can mediate a historical effect played by the economic capital or by the cultural capital itself. Together, these results highlight the importance of investing in cultural capital, as it may also foster the development and rate of participation in center‐based ECED. This may mitigate the effect of social disparities and economic inequalities on education. El desarrollo educativo de la primera infancia (ECED, por sus siglas en inglés) se reconoce cada vez más como un periodo crucial para el desarrollo humano. En este artículo se estudia la relación a nivel local del capital cultural, el capital económico y la participación en el ECED basado en centros. Se utilizó una base de datos nacional de alta calidad, que recogía datos de 103 provincias italianas. Para evaluar el efecto del capital cultural y económico en la participación en el ECED se utilizaron mapas coropléticos, modelos de ecuaciones estructurales (SEM, por sus siglas en inglés) y análisis de mediación. Se emplearon SEM multimuestras para evaluar las disparidades geográficas a escala regional. Se descubrió que las provincias del centro de Italia presentan el mayor nivel de capital cultural, así como la mayor tasa de participación en el ECED. El capital cultural, pero no el económico, está asociado a la participación en el ECED a corto y medio plazo. Al menos en parte, el capital cultural puede hacer de mediador en el efecto histórico desempeñado por el capital económico o por el propio capital cultural. En conjunto, estos resultados ponen de relieve la importancia de invertir en el capital cultural, ya que también puede fomentar el desarrollo y la tasa de participación en ECED basado en centros. Esto podría mitigar el efecto de las disparidades sociales y las desigualdades económicas en la educación. 乳幼児期の教育発達(Early childhood educational development:ECED)は、人間の発達にとって重要な時期であるものとして認識されるようになってきている。文化的資本、経済的資本、センターベースのECEDへの参加の関係を地域レベルで調べた。イタリアの103の県からデータを収集した質の高い全国データベースを使用した。階級区分図、構造方程式モデリング(SEM)、媒介分析モデルを採用し、文化的・経済的資本がECEDへの参加に及ぼす影響を評価した。マルチサンプルSEMを用いて、地理的格差を地域レベルで評価した。結果から、中央イタリアの県はECEDへの参加率が最も高く、最高レベルの文化的資本があることも示された。経済的資本ではなく文化的資本は、短期的および中期的なECEDへの参加と関連している。少なくとも部分的ではあるが、文化的資本は、経済的資本または文化的資本自体が果たす歴史的効果を媒介することができる。以上の結果は、センターベースのECEDの発展と参加率の上昇を促進する可能性もあるため、文化的資本への投資の重要性を強調するものである。これは、教育に対する社会的格差や経済的不平等の影響を軽減する可能性がある。
