Spatial agglomeration with vertical differentiation

Abstract

This paper constructs a two‐dimensional framework to take into consideration both horizontal and vertical differentiation. The focus of the paper is on the impact of vertical (quality) differentiation on the location configuration of firms. It shows that while the principle of minimum differentiation in location may be supported, the Pprinciple of maximum differentiation in location can never apply if firms engage in spatially discriminatory pricing. This paper proves that spatial agglomeration gives rise to the unique location equilibrium in both cases where firms charge uniform delivered and mill prices. Moreover, the location equilibria remain unchanged as quality is also endogenously determined. Resumen Este artículo construye un marco bidimensional para tomar en cuenta tanto la diferenciación horizontal como la vertical. El punto focal de este artículo es el impacto de la diferenciación vertical (calidad) en la configuración de la localización de empresas. Muestra que mientras que se podría apoyar el principio de diferenciación mínima en la localización, el principio de diferenciación máxima en la localización nunca será pertinente si las empresas se dedican a aplicar precios discriminatorios de manera espacial. Este artículo prueba que la aglomeración espacial constituye el único equilibrio de localización en los dos casos en los que las empresas establecen precios francos uniformes y precios de fabricación. Además, los equilibrios de localización permanecen inalterados ya que la calidad se determina también endógenamente.
