Assessing the regional impacts of a multi-hosting sport mega-event: The case of EURO 2020 in Rome

Abstract

This study assesses the regional economic impact of UEFA EURO 2020 in Rome, focusing on the four matches played at the Olympic Stadium. UEFA EURO 2020 was the first mega-event organized across an entire continent in a multi-hosting format, designed to combine the benefits of a major sporting event with more sustainable organizational costs. Using granular data collected from several institutional sources and a Computable General Equilibrium model based on the Lazio regional Social Accounting Matrix, the paper estimates the direct, indirect, and induced effects of the event on the regional economy. The results show a significant impact, with a total multiplier effect of around 1.45 and an additional net volume of employment equivalent to 9,762 full-time jobs per year.
