[Structure of Passenger Car Imports: Some Findings and Recommendations]

Abstract

In this study, the price and income elasticities of car imports in Türkiye estimated and proposals were presented to increase import substitution. The findings show that import demand is quite sensitive to developments in prices and income. Accordingly, the existence of a competitive domestic production alternative in the sector may lead to consumer preferences turning to domestic products in case of exchange rate-related price increases. However, it is evaluated that additional macroprudential measures may contribute to this process as well.
