Abstract

This paper analyses the labor supply differences across a sample of UK families between the years 2011 and 2018. The data is collected from the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions survey (EU-SILC), which allows us to estimate the relationship between the labor supply and a set of regressors: wages, the household non-labor income, socioeconomic variables, and a vector of distribution factors. The results reveal different response patterns for each spouse, for example, we can affirm that female labor supply is highly correlated with marital status and the number of children, which has obvious implications in equality. We can confirm that the collective model is a more accurate way to understand household economic decisions than the unitary way.
