Abstract

"Women have expanded their position on the labour market since German reunification. By now, almost half of the employees in Germany are women. However these findings only partly reflect women's participation in working life. In order to achieve a more differentiated picture of their participation in labour, the differing working hours of women and men have to be taken into account. The high proportion of women only working part time is leading to a strong gender time gap. Particularly during the family phase the divergences in hours worked become entrenched. The majority of couples are choosing the 'one-and-a-half earner model' with men working full-time and women working part-time." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
