Abstract

Understanding the interplay between technology adoption (TA) and human skills is crucial for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. However, firm‐level evidence on the patterns of adopting TA and their relationship with skills is limited. This study addresses this gap by analyzing an extensive dataset spanning from 2007 to December 2024. Through a comprehensive literature review and empirical analysis, the research identifies key factors influencing adoption, barriers to adoption, the impact of technology adoption on productivity and efficiency, competitive advantage, economic growth, environmental impact, technology transfer mechanisms, capacity building, and the role of international organizations and outcomes associated with TA. Smaller firms, however, face challenges in implementing upskilling strategies similar to those of larger firms. This disparity has significant implications for competitive dynamics, warranting attention from managers and policymakers. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and academics, highlighting areas for intervention and future research. Additionally, TA research needs to recognize success factors, new circular business models, and innovative frameworks. This examination will create new opportunities for researchers to explore novel dimensions in the field of TA.
