Abstract

[eng] The French Industrial Trade Deficit vs. France's Productive Capacity: a Sector-Based Study - The trade deficit has become wider in most industrial sectors since the early eighties. This is demonstrated by the drop in the rate by which our purchases abroad are balanced by our exports. . Though the various studies of this trend do not reach the same conclusions, they often throw light on the weaknesses of the supply side. This is confirmed in most industrial sectors. To be more precise, the responsibility belongs to the insufficient growth of the capacity of production and not to the relative profitability of exports. . Thus, an increased effort for investment seems to be necessary if France is to recover an even balance of trade.
