Abstract

"Using the data of the IAB employment sample, the inter-company labour mobility for the 1979 and 1985 cohorts of new entrants to the labour market was analysed. The matters studied were the distribution of the length of job tenure in the first and second company, as well as survival functions for the duration of the break following the first and second employment relationship and the length of job tenure in the first company (Kaplan Meier estimate). Similar patterns of mobility were found for both of the cohorts of new entrants to the labour market: most of the terminated employment relationships were shorter than 6 months. This result confirms the hypotheses of the job-shopping and job-matching models which say that it is only possible to ascertain whether workers and jobs are really suited to each other after a 'trial period'. The number of job changers was, however, clearly higher for the worker cohort of the 1979 boom year than it was for that of 1985." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
