Renewable energy in broiler production

Abstract

The constant modernization of the productive structure in the Brazilian production of broilers was essential for the country to consolidate itself as an important producer and exporter in the world market. On the other hand, the sector began to demand greater energy consumption. Considering this scenario, this study aimed to investigate the economic feasibility of producing photovoltaic solar energy and energy generated from chicken litter (biogas) in broilers. Thus, four projects were analyzed: (A) photovoltaic energy installed in the aerial part of the poultry houses; (B) photovoltaic energy installed on the ground; (C) production of biogas from rice husks; and (D) production of biogas from wood shavings. The following techniques were used as criteria for assessing the economic viability of these projects: Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Profitability Index (PI), Benefit-Cost Ratio (B/C), Discounted Payback (DP) and Equivalent Uniform Annual Value (EUAV), determining a Minimum Attractiveness Rate (MAR) of 7.26 % per year. The results of the feasibility analysis indicated that the projects are economically viable. Biogas production (rice husk) is considered the best option of the four projects from an economic point of view.
