Abstract

Urban wind energy utilization has numerous primary challenges, including noise pollution and limited installation area. The Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) operates with minimal noise and has a low center of gravity, making it well-suited for placement at top building roofs. This study serves as a guide for integrating building water storage tanks with hybrid Darrieus-Savonius VAWTs for the first time in a novel design using the building water storage tank as a support frame. The aim of this study is to optimize the power performance of the twin hybrid Darrieus-Savonius VAWTs integrated with the two water storage tanks of a building using the Taguchi model by tuning five factors: the turbine spacing (S), the configuration angle (ϕ), and the direction of rotation (RD), the relative height (h/H), and the pitch angle (θ). A three-dimensional, unsteady, and incompressible flow mathematical model is proposed, solved numerically, and validated. An Orthogonal Array (OA) L16 (45) has been constructed for the five factors and their four levels. The results show that the azimuth phase angle had the least effect on power performance, while the rotating directions factor (RD) has the most significant effect. Furthermore, the relative angle exerted the second-most influence, followed by the turbine spacing and the relative height. The rated TSR of the optimal case has been shifted to a higher value of (2.86) with an average power coefficient of 0.3159 and an enhancement of 27.65 % compared to that of the isolated rotor (Cpavg = 0.2475) at its rated TSR of 2.64 with a wider operational range of TSR. Through this research, it is possible to exploit the limited areas of building roofs to supply them with electricity with the maximum power density.
