Harvesting energy from windows? A qualitative analysis of semi-transparent photovoltaic systems through the experts’ perspectives

Abstract

This study evaluates the experts' knowledge, perceptions, and expectations & needs regarding Semi-Transparent Photovoltaic (STPV) technology, drawing on insights from various stakeholders —academia, public sector, market players, and NGOs in the context of Türkiye. While photovoltaic technologies play a pivotal role in achieving net-zero carbon emission targets globally, STPV systems offer notable potential in Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) due to their innovative design and aesthetic advantages. Despite growing technical interest, little is known about how various actors understand and engage with these technologies. To fill this gap, the study offers a stakeholder-centered qualitative approach based on semi-structured in-depth interviews to identify the drivers and barriers embedded within stakeholders' perspectives at an early stage. The findings offer critical insights capable of informing future technology policies, regulatory frameworks, and industrial applications. By focusing on early-stage insights from key actors, the research sheds light on the socio-institutional dynamics shaping technology adoption and outlines enablers and barriers to effective diffusion. The study contributes to ongoing efforts to align innovation with policy support, regulatory clarity, and user-oriented design in the context of Türkiye's sustainable building goals.
