Abstract

The flapping hydrofoil has certain advantages over traditional rotational turbines, such as a lower tip-speed ratio, fewer impacts on marine ecological environments, higher adaptations to shallow waters, and convenience of expanding the installed capacity. Energy-harvesting hydrofoils have become a research hotspot for renewable energy. Flapping hydrofoils for energy harvesting were reviewed. A detailed introduction of the motion combination, control strategy, governing equations, and performance evaluation parameters is provided. Typical parameters were classified into kinematic, environmental hydrodynamic, and structural types. The effects of these parameters on the energy-harvesting performance were analyzed by summarizing the optimal values. The present review summarizes the state-of-the-art progress in flapping hydrofoils and highlights future development directions that are beneficial to engineering designs and possible massive deployment in actual operational conditions.
