Abstract

The application of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) technology for the production of biocrude is limited by the high N and O contents. In this study, a process combining wet torrefaction and co-HTL with soybean straw was developed for elevating biocrude production and quality. After the wet torrefaction, up to 30.9 % N and 35.4 % O of SS were removed. The HTL of the torrefied SS by co-feeding with soybean straw increased the biocrude yield to as high as 29.1 wt%. When the ratio of soybean straw and the torrefied SS was 2:1, the highest synergistic extents of denitrogenation and deoxygenation were obtained. Based on the N-rich aqueous phase from the wet torrefaction and P-rich solid residue from the co-HTL, a method of coupling recovery of N and P nutrients was proposed to produce the value-added N and P fertilizer (struvite), with the N and P recovery rates of 78.1 % and 94.0 %, respectively.
