Female executives and corporate environmental responsibility under media bias

Abstract

Public attention to corporate environmental responsibility has risen over the decades. The present research exploits the effect of female executives on corporate environmental responsibility against the backdrop of media bias. Grounded in a large panel of listed companies, we offer robust evidence that female executives lead to higher corporate environmental performance. More importantly, this paper shows that the positive effect is larger in the face of strong media bias. Our conclusions hold across various sensitivity and endogeneity analyses. In summary, our study has the potential to advance studies on the role of media and female executives in shaping corporate behavior.
