Abstract

The increasing renewable integration has contributed to the seasonal imbalance of electric energy systems, posing great challenges to system planning and operation. Seasonal energy storage (SES), including seasonal hydrogen/thermal storage, could convert renewable electricity into other energy types and realize the long-duration storage of renewable energy. Therefore, this paper introduces seasonal energy storage (SES) to mitigate the seasonal imbalance. A unified model is first formulated to describe the critical operation characteristics of SES: long-term storage, multi-type energy conversion, and cross-spatial delivery. The formulated SES model is then incorporated into the planning model of electric-hydrogen-heating energy systems to investigate the values of SES in promoting the integration of renewable electricity and reducing energy costs. The seasonal variation of the storage operation is analyzed in detail to prove the necessity of employing SES. A case study is performed on the Northwest China energy system to validate the model and explore the potential role of SES. The results indicate that the introduction of seasonal hydrogen/thermal storage could reduce the average hydrogen and heating supply costs at 13.15 CNY/kg and 0.8 CNY/kWh.
