Abstract

In this work, a new processing scheme for producing power and liquid fuels from flare gases is proposed. Additionally, this study proposes a novel framework for the multi-objective technical, economic, and environmental optimization of the process of converting flare gas into liquid fuels and electricity. The suggested method entails turning greenhouse gas (GHG)-emitting flare systems into biodiesel and electricity. In a multi-objective optimization framework, the process was optimized via a genetic algorithm (GA) to minimize overall annualized expenses and the possible influence on global warming and other environmental indicators while maximizing the rate of production of liquid fuel was studied. Compared to a scenario where typical flaring procedures are used and diesel is produced from green biological sources, the results demonstrate that the suggested approach produces an impressive 33.9 % reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, in nations where flare gas combustion and fossil fuel-based diesel manufacturing are practiced, it is more important to shift toward flare gas recovery systems rather than biodiesel production technologies. Compared to a base case where diesel is made from fossil fuels, which is a more reasonable assumption given the state of the energy market today, the results showed an even greater GHG emission savings (52.7 %).
