Cyberbullying among youth in developing countries: A qualitative systematic review with bibliometric analysis

Abstract

In today’s tech-mediated world, cyberspace has spread beyond the Internet and as a result, it is high time we explored the embryonic issue of cyberbullying among youth. This qualitative systematic review aims to categorize the aspects of cyberbullying encountered by young females in developing countries. A total of 860 research items published in the Web of Science and Scopus databases between 2007 and 2021 were explored. Using the PRISMA flow diagram, 47 relevant publications were identified and synthesized. Based on the bibliometric data, term co-occurrence network maps were created using VOSviewer. Subsequently, cross-mapping the bibliometric terms with the detailed qualitative interviews piloted in a developing country, the authors developed three themes, i.e., social bullying, psychological bullying, and invasion of privacy. This research reveals that cyberbullying comprehends social, psychological, and invasion of privacy aspects for young females in developing countries. Finally, this qualitative paper concludes with future research directions in this domain.
