Abstract

•Female-led businesses are more likely to recruit women, in management positions.•‘Availability-related flexibility’ is a significant tourism employee characteristic.•Tourism managers construct female workers’ lack of availability as a choice.•Social reproductive gender roles influence ‘ideal tourism worker’ discourse.•Tourism managers’ silences confirm masculinised ‘ideal tourism worker’ discourse.
