Abstract

•Sharing economy start-ups and regulatory authorities have not aligned well with each other.•Sharing economy being a potential pathway to a more sustainable form of tourism is debatable.•Sharing economy empowers people’s mobility.•Traditional tourism service providers innovated and redefined their business models.
