The US under Joe Biden: U-Turn or “America First Light”?

Abstract

On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden will enter the White House as the 46th President of the United States. The transfer of power in Washington is associated with many hopes and expectations in Germany and Europe. Many expect a relaxation of transatlantic relations and a return of the US to multilateralism and a rules-based international order. Changes are also expected in economic policy, which would give positive impetus to trade and climate policy in particular. Are the hopes for a new political era justified?
