Abstract

This study analyses the dynamics of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the Member States of the European Union (EU-27), highlighting the discrepancies between countries with high total emissions, which have per capita emissions below the EU average, and small countries, which have the highest emissions per capita. Through a quantitative analysis of Eurostat data and the application of Pearson's correlation matrices and Granger causality analysis, the study identified GDP per capita as the factor with the largest impact on emissions. The results show a significant reduction in emissions since 2010, due to stringent environmental policies and the transition to renewable energy sources. The research underlines the importance of differentiated policies tailored to each country's specific economic and demographic circumstances to ensure a sustainable reduction of GHG emissions.
