Market Competition, Community Rating, Risk Equalisation And Efficiency In Health Insurance – A Case Study

Abstract

Risk equalisation payments threatened to undermine competition in the Irish health insurance sector, which is already dominated by a state‐owned provider with special access to policy‐makers. The Supreme Court's decision against such payments is therefore to be welcomed.
