Regional Unemployment in Turkey

Abstract

High unemployment rates are a concern for a country, existence of high regional unemployment differentials is another. Turkey has both. This paper using spatial and nonparametric techniques documents the wide regional unemployment disparities in Turkey from 1980 to 2000. Data indicate that the provincial unemployment rates are quite persistent and the gap across different regions widens even further with spatial clusters emerging across the country. The evidence indicates that human capital and demand deficiency are the sources of observed disparity across provinces. Furthermore, the sources of unemployment differentials have changed over time. Resumen Las tasas de desempleo elevadas son una preocupación para un país, y la existencia de diferenciales elevados de desempleo regional es otra. Turquía sufre ambos. Este artículo, mediante el empleo de técnicas espaciales y no paramétricas, documenta las amplias disparidades de desempleo regional en Turquía desde 1980 a 2000. Los datos indican que las tasas de desempleo provincial son bastante persistentes y la disparidad entre las diferentes regiones se agranda aun más con aglutinaciones espaciales emergentes en todo el país. Las pruebas indican que el capital humano y la deficiencia de demanda son las fuentes de la disparidad observada entre provincias. Además, las causas de las disparidades de desempleo han cambiado con el tiempo.
