Croissance du revenu réel du Canada et des États-Unis avant et après 2000 : renversement des fortunes

Abstract

Les évaluations du rendement d'une économie se basent souvent sur une mesure du produit intérieur brut (PIB) réel par habitant, lequel représente la rémunération moyenne (revenu du travail plus services du capital) générée par la production intérieure au sein d'une économie. Puisque le PIB réel est une mesure en dollars constants de la rémunération attribuable au capital et au travail au sein d'une économie, il ne rend pas compte de qui détient le capital, de quelle part de ce capital est utilisée par la production ou de l'incidence des variations des prix relatifs sur le volume de biens et services pouvant être achetés. Il est possible de modifier les estimations traditionnelles du PIB de façon à tenir compte de ces facteurs. Le présent document examine le rendement de l'économie canadienne selon d'autres mesures, notamment le revenu intérieur brut (RIB), le revenu national brut (RNB) et le revenu national net (RNN). Ce document examine aussi le rendement relatif des économies canadienne et américaine selon des mesures type du PIB et ces autres mesures. La comparaison couvre la période de 1980 à 2006, en accordant une attention plus particulière à la période de 2002 à 2006. Au cours de ces dernières années, les fluctuations au niveau du prix des produits de base, du prix des produits manufacturés, du taux de change, des revenus de placements internationaux et de la consommation de capital ont fortement contribué à la croissance du revenu réel du Canada.
