Produktdifferenzierung in deutschen Industrieunternehmen 1995 – 2004: Ausmaß und Bestimmungsgründe

Abstract

In jüngster Zeit ist ein zunehmendes Interesse an der modelltheoretischen und empirischen Analyse von Mehrproduktunternehmen zu verzeichnen. Mit einem neu verfügbaren repräsentativen Längsschnittdatensatz für 1995 bis 2004 dokumentiert die vorliegende Studie erstmals umfassend für deutsche Industrieunternehmen das Ausmaß der Produktdifferenzierung und die Bedeutung von Ein- und Mehrproduktunternehmen. Rund 60 Prozent der Unternehmen waren im Jahr 2004 Mehrproduktunternehmen mit durchschnittlich 4,4 Produkten. Mehrproduktunternehmen finden sich häufiger unter den größeren Unternehmen; ihr Anteil am Gesamtumsatz und am Gesamtexport lag bei 81 Prozent bzw. 85 Prozent. Unternehmen mit zahlreichen Produkten sind allerdings selten – mehr als zehn Produkte werden nur in etwas über drei Prozent aller Unternehmen hergestellt. Das Ausmaß der Produktdifferenzierung ist dabei über den betrachteten Zeitraum sehr stabil. Die empirischen Untersuchungen zeigen, dass Mehrproduktunternehmen verglichen mit Einproduktunternehmen größer, produktiver, humankapitalintensiver und stärker forschungsorientiert sind. Da diese Eigenschaften in den Mehrproduktunternehmen bereits vor ihrem Schritt vom Ein- zum Mehrproduktunternehmen bestehen, können sie in Übereinstimmung mit den theoretischen Überlegungen aus dem Resource View als Ursachen von Produktdifferenzierung gelten.
