Abstract

"Recently, the share of high-skilled immigrants to Germany has been steadily increasing. These new immigrants are on average more skilled than the current migrant population in Germany. One of the reasons for this is that the main countries of origin are changing with increasing shares coming from the EU member states which traditionally have had relatively high shares of high-skilled immigrants. With regard to the labour-market integration of the new immigrants, especially the males from EU-countries have high labour-force participation rates. Their levels are even higher than that of the native male population. They are also higher than those of the respective total ethnic population. The labour-force participation rates of new female immigrants are both lower than those of German women as well as those of the female migrants who have lived in Germany for longer. If the quality of the jobs is analysed, then there is a sharp difference between immigrants from the EU-15-member states and others. A high fraction both of men and women from these countries manage to find (high-)skilled jobs. This also holds for men from Non-European countries. All other migrants fare less well but in general slightly better than those which have lived in Germany for a long time." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
