Mixed embeddedness of women student entrepreneurs in the entrepreneurial ecosystem

Abstract

Entrepreneurial ecosystems play a crucial role in supporting entrepreneurs, and there has often been an assumption of homogeneity among stakeholders. However, gender in entrepreneurship literature or entrepreneurship education shows some of the diversity among entrepreneurs and their more difficult access to entrepreneurial ecosystem resources. Through our systematic literature review, our goal is to understand what the embeddedness of women student entrepreneurs in the entrepreneurial ecosystem looks like. Our conceptual model illustrates a mixed embeddedness of women student entrepreneurs, emphasising the non-inclusive nature of the mainstream entrepreneurial ecosystem and the absence of a specific sub-entrepreneurial ecosystem for them. Thus, further studies on the navigation and identities of women student entrepreneurs are necessary to better understand this mixed embeddedness. Additionally, exploring the gendered aspect of entrepreneurial ecosystems is imperative to shift the focus away from solutions centred on individual changes on the part of entrepreneurs.
