Regional Size, Industrial Location and Input-Output Expenditure Coefficients

This paper develops some of the themes raised in a recent paper by FLEGG et al. , 1995. The question we explore is the relationship between the size of a region and the values of the expenditure coefficients, as estimated using location quotients. By using hypothetical examples we show that there is no theoretical relationship between regional size and the value of a regional expenditure coefficient. The reason is that it depends on the spatial distribution of activity and industrial linkages. On the other hand, it would also appear that in many cases there does seem to be an empirical relationship, and that this observation is worthy of further research. MCCANN P. et DEWHURST J. H. LL. La raison en est que ce coefficient depend de la distribution spatiale de l'activite et des liens industriels. Cependant, il apparait que dans de nombreux cas, on semble pouvoir constater une relation empirique, et cette observation est digne d'etre approfondie par de plus amples recherches. Wir untersuchen die Beziehung zwischen der Grosse einer Region und den Werten der Ausgabekoeffizienten, die uber lokale Quotienten geschatzt werden. Wir zeigen durch hypothetische Beispiele, dass keine theoretische Beziehung zwischen regionaler Grosse und dem Wert eines regionalen Ausgabekoeffizienten besteht. Der Grund dafur ist, dass er von einer spatialen Verteilung von Aktivitat und industriellen Verbindungen abhangt. Andererseits scheint es, dass in vielen Fallen eine empirische Beziehung besteht und diese Beobachtung verdient weitere Forschung.
