Drought's silent symphony and unmasking the invisible weight on human life in Chhatarpur of Bundelkhand Region, India

Abstract

This study investigates the intricate dynamics of drought occurrences in Bundelkhand, a region renowned for its rugged topography, persistent arid conditions, and escalating impact of climate change on human well-being. Drought events significantly shape the climatic landscape of Bundelkhand, resulting in an unsustainable livelihood ecosystem and adverse effects on the local population. By analysing the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) data from 1982 to 2022 and drawing insights from semi-structured questionnaire interviews, this study reveals a recurring pattern of substantial drought events occurring approximately every 5–7 years, with prolonged dry spells during the monsoon season. These droughts have far-reaching implications, negatively affecting agricultural productivity, depleting grazing lands, and driving migration to urban centres. Despite these formidable challenges, enhancing community resilience initiatives and improving water governance systems through policy advocacy are essential in addressing the water scarcity prevalent in the region. This research underscores the urgent need to overhaul the water governance framework, emphasising community awareness in natural resource management as a pivotal strategy to mitigate drought conditions exacerbated by drought-induced climate change. Ultimately, this study contribute to formulating effective interventions for the sustainable development of the Bundelkhand Region of India.
