Abstract

[eng] The French and German economies have been noticeably different in terms of their performances in foreign trade for about ten years: there have been recurrent deficits for France and large surpluses for Germany, which is the world's first exporting country, particularly as far as industrial goods are concerned. Germany succeeds in selling its products at a higher price, whereas France has difficulties capturing the demand it receives. . In the field of capital goods, in particular, the capacity to innovate and be different was undoubtedly lower in France during the eighties, which may have contributed to losses in important market shares. On the other hand, the German performance in the production of such sophisticated commodities as capital goods enables Germany to . have a stronger overall position in industrially developed countries.
