Financial Systems And Banking Crises: An Assessment

Abstract

Tradicionalmente una vieja preocupación entre los economistas se refiere a los efectos que los sistemas financieros pudieran tener en e1 desempeño económico. Aquí investigamos 1os "hechos estilizados" entre los sistemas financieros y las crisis bancarias mediante el uso de indicadores simples y de componentes-principales, y mediante ei uso de regresiones de MCO. El estudio se fundamenta en un conjunto de indicadores de fragilidad bancaria, estructura financiera y desarrollo financiero para una muestra de 47 economías durante e1 periodo 1990- 1997. Los hechos estilizados sugieren que el desarrollo financiero se asocia a aquellos sistemas financieros en donde predominan los mercados de valores y de activos. Además, la evidencia sugiere que dicha vinculación es magnificada durante episodios de crisis bancarias sistémicas v no sistémicas. En consecuencia, nuestros hallazgos sugieren que 1as crisis bancarias pudieran fomentar el desarrollo financiero v la transformación de los sistemas financieros en sistemas basados en los mercados.
