Abstract

Environmental degradation and global climate change emphasize the need to integrate ecological considerations with transportation development. This study focuses on transportation network in ecologically sensitive mountain areas of Beijing, China. It developed a system to assess transportation suitability in fragile areas by considering environmental capacity, transportation needs, and ecological protection. The study reveals that only 25.31 % of the area is suitable for roads, with 18.59 % of existing roads located in critically important ecological areas. The newly constructed network post-experiment spans 764.86 km, with an average suitability raised to 7.91. Compared to the urban master plan, this network achieves a spatial fit of 84.51 %. This network is highly valuable for planning under ecological protection and resilience requirements. Innovative construction methods, including bridges instead of roads, divided roads on slopes, and scenic roads along ridges, were utilized to enhance road conditions, offering a new approach to sustainable transportation development in ecologically sensitive regions.
